I figure I can't be the only photog here who thinks snow is extremely pretty, so would anyone be interested in gathering for a romp through the snow with cameras the next time it comes down in a picturesque way?

(The last time was a bit wet but I still got some decent shots in it!)

In my old town, there were kids that would go door to door after a snow storm and shovel sidewalks for $20. I'm noticing that that isn't the norm here in Somerville. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any enterprising youths that might be interested in shoveling my sidewalk, stairs and driveway -- price negotiable.

Another good Davis Sq deal on BuyWithMe. $20 for $40 at Tu y Yo. I love mexican food, and hear great things about this little restaurant. Looking forward to giving it a try! Just wanted to give you all a heads up.

I live near Teele Square, a 10 minute walk from Davis. I'm moving to Seattle, and am selling some things so as to fit into one ReloCube. I would like for things to be picked up by Sunday. Links to listings below the cut.

About a month ago, I came across a woman making lovely knit goods for sale outside the Holland St. Exit. I commissioned her (well, I asked her) to make my baby some mittens and booties, and she said they'd be ready in 2 days. I wasn't able to make it back for about a week, and ever since then I haven't seen her when I head to the square (which, admittedly, isn't all that often). Has anyone else seen her lately? Do you know if she has certain hours or days when she's there?

If you're on AT&T and your phone is even crappier than usual tomorrow at around 3PM, it's not Davis-exclusive, that's because a bunch of iPhone users across the country are running data-intensive applications to protest AT&T's crappy network. It's called Operation Chokehold. Enough people are angry about this, and AT&T's network is so stinkin' miserable, that it's going to make a dent. Just FYI.

It's the 8pm performance at the Somerville Theater. I'm looking to sell it at face value ($20). I can arrange for a friend meet up with you in front of the theater at 7:45pm for the exchange.

Where in the Davis Sq area could one get a Christmas-tree stand? particularly, one for a very small tree? Do they have them at CVS/Rite Aid?

thx!

7-Eleven buys New England Pantry

I don't think this is good news for our neighborhood convenience store and deli: "The company anticipates that stores operating under the White Hen Pantry brand will begin converting to stores to the 7-Eleven brand in 2010."

IF you read both Davis_Square and Parkerfarmcsa, you'll see this twice... sorry.

Hello all-Well,winter really is here-down to the single digits this morning as I went out to get my coffee-I actually happy that it is so cold, the firewood business has been a bit slack the past few weeks with the mild weather, now, with the mercury dropping the phone is starting to ring for orders-much needed as I rebuild from a devastating year.
In the meantime,I remain frustrated at my attempt to rebuild the mailing list so I can reconnect with all who participated in the 2009 farm share program-which is important as I have some important news regarding signing up for the 2010 season,as well as vouchers redeemable for produce that I want to distribute to compensate for the weather reduced yields of 2009.
So if you could please forward this note to friends who may have participated, post it on your blogs, myspace, facebook ect,I would appreciate it greatly. If you are getting this message it means you are already on the list and will be receiving the previously mentioned update,as well as all other news from the farm!
Thank you,and I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season!-Steve

At the Medical Reserve Corps meeting tonight the health department team announced a flu vaccination clinic tomorrow (Dec 17) at the City Hall Annex on 50 Evergreen Avenue, Somerville, MA 02143.

They will offer seasonal and H1N1 vaccinations. You can get both at the same session. They just got approval to open it up beyond the risk groups today, everyone can get it now, and it came too late to get it on the city web site.

Summary:
December 17 Flu vaccination clinic

50 Evergreen Ave St, City Hall Annex

Tweetable form: Somerville ma: vax clinic 4-7pm (Thu Dec17). City Hall Annex. Seasonal and H1N1 both available.

I have one extra ticket for the 7:30 Illuminations tour on Saturday night. It's Trolley A, which is rumored to be hosted by Tom Champion. I'd like to sell the ticket for face value ($10) and can meet you in the City Hall lobby before the tour for the hand-off or somewhere in Davis Square on Thursday or Friday.

This morning about 7:30, I drove past 2286 Mass Ave - across from Meacham Rd and it looked the like scaffolding that had been up in front of the building had fallen. A police man was there and the scaffolding was partly in the street and looked like it landed in the parking meters.

I hope no one was hurt if in fact it fell. It's been so windy, I'm surprised it's been up so long.

I always get a little nervous about walking under those things.

Fur!
This is kind of a weird question, but I'm only finding large amounts for sale online, so...

Does anyone have any scraps of fur or small hides they want to sell? I'm looking for something inexpensive, well tanned and in good condition, soft, and warm. Dark colors preferred but not necessary. I need to be able to get two 5"x5" squares to line the earflaps of a hat, so it doesn't need to be a lot of fur. Fox, rabbit, bear, etc, anything soft and warm. No fake fur. Thanks. :)

Hey Kids,
'tis the season of outrageous tickets for unshovelled sidewalks. My snowblower broke last winter when the plow broke off a piece of the street and left it on my sidewalk under a few inches of snow, much to my dismay. Anyway I'm wondering if anyone knows a good place in the area that fixes snowblowers? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The mysterious bowling alley in Ball Square is a mystery no longer! I slipped a note in an envelope through the mail slot at the alley, and the owner called me back the next day. His name is Butch and he was very nice, and he rents out the alley now and then for private functions. He's happy to rent to us! It's 8 lanes of candle pin, BYOB/food. So let's have a [info]davis_square bowling party in January or February!

Bowling leagues have the place permanently booked every weeknight, but the alley is available for private party rental on Saturday nights. I know we don't usually do DS_LJ meetups on Saturdays, but I think this is worthy of an exception. :-) $9 a head includes shoe rental and three hours of bowling, 7PM to 10PM. They don't sell food or beverages but we can bring our own, including alcohol. Organizational details to follow. But first, we have to find a date!

Note that this poll is not an RSVP poll, just a date survey. We've eliminated the 1st week in Jan (too soon after the holidays), the 3rd week in Jan (Arisia weekend), and Valentines weekend (lots of people will be busy). I can't guarantee the alley will be available on the #1 favorite date, but lets see when the most folks could make it. Wanna bowl in Ball Square? Check off all the Saturday nights you could do it. We need a minimum of 20 people to make this happen!

I know matters are not this simple. Clearly it's not simply a question of either/or... but, as a sort of thought experiment, I'm curious how people here would feel about the following:

A few years ago Handscom Airforce Base in Concord started opening up to commercial traffic. There was a huge push-back, both from the residents of Concord, but also from those whose interest was in the Walden Pond State Reservation, and the Minuteman National Historical Park and Wildlife Refuge. But there are commercial flights out of there now, with increased road traffic to and from the airport, etc. Periodically their license to run commercial flights, and how many, will come up for review.

*If* it was a simple matter of this or that, which would you prefer?
(Radio Buttons, because, while yes, "it depends" and "neither" (or "both") are all valid points, for the purposes of a straight opinion poll, we'll push it to an either/or anyway.)

Which would you prefer to see (hear) happen?

Check out the Logan wind forecast for the next 9 days: 100% NorthWest winds. Know what that means? Planes over Davis the whole time.

Here is the logan live radar: http://www4.passur.com/bos.html
